This policy explains how PastPrint sources, cites, and credits the historical materials used in our articles.

Primary Sources

Our primary source for contemporary historical reporting is the Library of Congress Chronicling America archive (chroniclingamerica.loc.gov), a free public collection of digitized American newspapers spanning 1690 to 1963.

Every article cites the specific newspapers consulted, with direct permalinks to the scanned pages. You can verify any claim by clicking through to the original source.

Featured Images

Featured images on our articles are sourced from:

  • Wikimedia Commons — Public domain and Creative Commons images
  • Library of Congress — Public domain photographs and prints
  • National Archives — U.S. government public domain materials

Image captions credit the source whenever available.

Newspaper Thumbnail Embeds

Each article displays a thumbnail of the actual contemporary newspaper page, with the caption “From the Contemporary Record” and a direct link to the full scanned page at the Library of Congress. This lets readers see how events were reported at the time.

Original Quotes

Every article includes at least one short direct quote (under 15 words) from a contemporary newspaper, presented in a featured callout with attribution to the specific publication and date.
